• The Fairfax County Office of Elections is currently seeking to hire about 150 individuals to help prepare for the November 2022 election. Pay is approximately $15/hr.

    For all positions, you are hired as a seasonal employee, paid hourly, and must go through a background check including fingerprinting. The work is seasonal with no benefits and is dependent on the election schedule.

  • We are currently hiring for positions in different parts of the office. Please review each opportunity below and indicate whether you are interested in it or not. Your application information will be forwarded to the appropriate supervisors for consideration. If hired, you will be assigned to only one or two divisions, as appropriate.

    Unless otherwise noted, all positions start in early September and end shortly after election day, require 30-40 hours of availability per week, and may require overtime on evenings or weekends during peak periods. A background check and fingerprinting is required for all positions.

  • Early Voting Satellite Staff (about 60 people needed)

    Staff are needed for a 10-day period (October 27 to November 5) to help at one of 16 early voting satellite locations around the county. Shifts are 5 to 8 hours. Mandatory in-person training will occur in October.

    Responsibilities are very similar to working as an election officer on election day.

    Ideal candidates will have previously worked as an election officer, be comfortable checking in voters on Poll Pads, and able to walk outside the polling place to assist curbside voters when needed.

  • Absentee Mail Staff (about 15 people needed)

    Absentee mail operations are from September 26 to November 14. Interested individuals will need to commit to working Mon-Wed-Fri or Tue-Thu for 6-hour shifts and be willing to consider extra hours, as needed.

    Typical responsibilities include counting & sorting incoming mail, entering absentee mail voter information in the statewide voter database, and extracting and scanning absentee mail ballots. Most work can be done while seated at a table, often using a computer. Some work will require transporting boxes weighing up to 20 pounds.

  • Voter Registration Staff (about 25 people needed)

    Staff are needed beginning early September for 30-40 hours per week.

    Typical responsibilities include responding to voter emails and phone calls, processing voter registration applications, processing absentee voting applications, and other similar data entry tasks. Most work will be done while seated at a computer.

    Ideal candidates should be familiar with basic election information, be comfortable talking to voters, and able to process applications on a computer daily.

  • Voting Equipment Staff (Rovers) (about 10 people needed)

    Staff are needed from September to November for 10-40 hours per week (varies depending on task). Work is performed in many locations: elections office in Fairfax, warehouse in Burke, courthouse in City of Fairfax, and various polling places. To be clear, voting equipment staff ("Rovers") work much more than just on election day!

    Typical responsibilities include preparing and testing voting equipment, packing and distributing supplies, visiting polling places before and on election day, answering questions from Chief election officers, participating in post-election activities, and other tasks as needed.

    Ideal candidates should be familiar with election officer procedures, may have prior experience as a Chief or Assistant Chief, willing to work in a warehouse regularly, able to work 7am-3pm schedule on warehouse days, able to push/pull/lift items that are 20-40 pounds, and can drive a vehicle to various locations regularly.

  • Supplies and Materials Staff (about 2 people needed)

    Staff are needed beginning early September for 30-40 hours per week.

    Typical responsibilities include printing, separating, organizing, packing, and unpacking election materials.

    Ideal candidates should have attention to detail, basic math and computer skills, good communication skills, be able to lift up to 20 lbs., be a team player, and be able to work while standing.

  • Election Officer Staff (about 2 people needed)

    Staff are needed beginning early September for 30-40 hours per week.

    Typical responsibilities include responding to election officer emails and phone calls, assigning election officers to precincts, helping prepare for training classes, data entry, and other similar tasks. Most work will be done while seated at a computer.

    Ideal candidates should be familiar with election officer procedures, be comfortable talking to election officers daily, and have strong computer skills.

  • HR Staff (about 5 people needed)

    Staff are needed beginning August 1 for 30-40 hours per week.

    Typical responsibilities include responding to basic employee HR questions, processing emails and phone calls, administrative tasks related to hiring and onboarding new employees, data entry, and other similar tasks.

    Ideal candidates should be able to work in a fast-paced environment to meet multiple deadlines.

  • IT Staff (about 2 people needed)

    Staff are needed from November 1 to November 14 for 20-40 hours per week. Individuals must be willing to work extra hours on evenings and weekends during this time.

    Typical responsibilities include basic desktop computer support, Microsoft Office and Office Online support, and other similar tasks. Most work can be done while seated at a computer.

    Ideal candidates will have an IT background, especially working in a help desk environment.

  • Provisional Ballot Research Staff (about 40 people needed)

    Immediately after election day, we need additional staff to review every provisional ballot envelope, record voter information in an Excel spreadsheet, and research the provisional situation in the statewide voter database. Due to changes in state law, we must be ready for up to a 5x to 10x increase in the number of provisional ballots this election.

    Candidates must be available to work daily from Wednesday, November 9, to Monday, November 14. Two shifts will be available: 8am-3:30pm and 3pm-10pm. The actual working schedule will be determined by the number of provisional ballots received.

    Ideal candidates must be detail-oriented, comfortable using Excel, and enjoy solving mysteries. Must also attend training, which will be scheduled prior to election day.
