May 2020 Letter from NeKaMo Camp Director
Dear Camp Family,
We are truly saddened to share the news that we are cancelling our 2020 summer camp sessions. Our camp board has spent the last 8+ weeks focused on how to proceed this summer. We know that many of us really want camp to happen, but it has become clear that the right and safe decision is to cancel our current sessions. We had hoped to hear from our local authorities as to what stage of re-opening we will be in during camp time, but at this point that still remains unclear, and we are simply out of time to be able to effectively operate under the new distancing guidelines.
Camp, as we know it, is quite the opposite of physical distancing: living in a cabin group, having family style meals, gathering closely around a campfire, and singing songs like “Grab Another Hand.” The changes that would be required of us right now are daunting and would make our most beloved camp activities unrecognizable. Camp as we know it is simply not possible right now.
We know you look forward to camp all year long, as do we. It is hard to imagine a summer without camp. But we also know that our God remains faithful and good. He is not surprised by this news. He promises that He is near to the broken-hearted and wants all of us to run to Him and to His word as we process our feelings and disappointments.
If you have already registered for camp this year you will receive a full refund of all fees and deposits paid to date. If you have not received your full refund by the end of May, please contact us at firstname.lastname@example.org.
Praise the Lord that, as a rental group with volunteer staff, the future of our camp is not in jeopardy due to the financial fallout from this year! If your family is in a good place financially and would like to make a donation to camp, we would ask that you consider making a donation to our host site Camp CUMCITO (City Union Mission Camp In The Ozarks). We are their largest rental group, and our cancelation will impact them more than it will us.
If you would like to make a donation to either NeKaMo or Camp CUMCITO, you can do so here.
Moving forward, we want to encourage you to keep a few things in mind as you mourn this news:
—Turn to the Lord. Share all of your feelings openly with Him and ask for His comfort and guidance. How may He want to use this time to align your vision with His?
— Lean on your camp friends. Reach out and reminisce about camp with other people who truly relate and are going through the same thing.
— Check in with us. Between June 7-20 we will be active on social media sharing ideas and surprises to hopefully give you a little taste of NeKaMo at home.
Be sure of our prayers for you! We will miss you very much and we look forward to meeting again in 2021, Lord willing. In the meantime we will leave you with the words from our traditional good-bye circle song:
“Good-bye our God is watching over you.
Good-bye His mercies go before you.
Good-bye and we’ll be praying for you.
So good-bye, may God bless you.”
